The Castle School houses twelve "troubled" girls and employs therapy, comradery and strict routine to help them. Mental illness, grief, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders and drug use are all mentioned. The book starts out kind of dreary and negative but as the girls get to know themselves and each other, the reader begins to understand what the Castle School is attempting to do. The positive (but not storybook ending) is a pleasant surprise. Appropriate for grades 8 and up.The Castle School houses twelve "troubled" girls and employs therapy, comradery and strict routine to help them. Gary Paulsen had a rough and neglectful childhood to say the least. At the age of five, his mother put him on a train with some money pinned to his jacket and sent him off to family members. Thankfully, they were good people, but his time there was cut short abruptly. Fast forward to the age of thirteen, living hand to mouth, a librarian hands him a book and something magical happens. I think this book is appropriate for mature middle-schoolers and up. It is not a gentle read due to graphic imagery including war torn Manila, army life, and child neglect. This is a riveting story even if you aren't familiar with Gary Paulsen's books.Gary Paulsen had a rough and neglectful childhood to say the least. Fascinating read! If you are a fan of "Silence of the Lambs" or the "I Hunt Killers" series by Barry Lyga, this book is for you. Teenagers Emma, a serial killer survivor, and Travis, a United States Marshal candidate, are recruited by the FBI to assist and provide insight with cold cases. When an active serial killer becomes the focus of the investigation, things take a dark turn. This book does have gory imagery and disturbing scenes. The ending left an opening for a sequel as well.Fascinating read! If you are a fan of "Silence of the Lambs" or the "I Hunt Killers" series by Barry Lyga, this book is for you. The unreliable narrator is showcased in this quick, thrilling read. Hannah has been characterized as a danger to herself and others, but "obviously" there has been a huge mistake because she is perfectly healthy.
