Benny Lewis, who speaks over ten languages--all self-taught--runs the largest language-learning blog in the world, Fluent In 3 Months. Lewis is a full-time "language hacker," someone who devotes all of his time to finding better, faster, and more efficient ways to learn languages. Fluent in 3 Months: How Anyone at Any Age Can Learn to Speak Any Language from Anywhere in the World is a new blueprint for fast language learning. Lewis argues that you don't need a great memory or "the language gene" to learn a language quickly, and debunks a number of long-held beliefs, such as adults not being as good of language learners as children.

While I appreciate the author's eye-opening statements on fluency, I really felt that apart from that and the couple of hints for memorizing words, this book really did little else for me.
(Because this book does not have "Characters, etc." My review is going to be a little different.)

WHAT DOES IT SAY?: This book mainly stresses the difference in definitions of fluency and that you should practice daily. (We knew that, right?) It also goes through the different levels of fluency and A, B, and C fluency

HOW DOES IT HELP?: I found that apart from the things mentioned above it told me little else that I could use right now. Although it does confirm my belief that you don't need Rosetta Stone in order to learn a language. Use that money to buy food.

HOW DOES IT NOT HELP?: It didn't really not help, just made me sad that you have to invest A LOT of TIME, ENERGY, and MONEY into learning a language in three months. Ah well.

This book is how to become fluent in any language in three months, and if you think you're going to become fluent in ~92 days by just doing a Duolingo exercise, you're wrong. The fact that immersion is one of the best ways to learn a language means that you have to spend money on buying things like, "Harry Potter" translated into Indonesian, which I honestly don't have that extra cash lying around.

Filled with lots of excellent advice. It is important to keep in mind that the author has a different definition of “fluent” than the typical person. I feel like the idea are more suited for a person that doesn’t have a lot of responsibilities outside of work.

What amounts to an excellent pep talk about foreign language acquisition, with some clever, unconventional suggestions on how to avoid the tedium & fatigue built into the more traditional cirricula & learning methods. Cinco estrellas! Muy recomendable...! CR

I didn't find the book useful. I think the author is way too optimistic about a person attaining fluency in the time frame he writes about, no matter how motivated that person might be. Most people have other commitments besides learning a language and don't have the time to use the techniques and methods the author discusses in his book.

I learned about this book from the TED talk about said author. As a person struggling to learn a second language, I felt rather disappointed in my progress and wasn't sure how to progress. After reading this, I felt my motivation for language learning increased and I began to enjoy what I was learning much more. Nevertheless, it's extremely important to note that all these techniques in this book require one thing: "hardwork" and it is stated in there many times.

I like this book, it helped a lot with resources and different techniques on how to remember words and so much more! If you are interested in learning a language you should check this out.

A really useful book. I am bilingual and yet still found this book had new ideas that inspired me to brush up on my third language and learn a fourth!

Definitely worth reading!

Well... it's complicated. I will just buy Rosetta Stone.
