The first novel in #1 New York Times bestselling author Jan Karon's beloved series set in America's favorite small town: Mitford.
It's easy to feel at home in Mitford. In these high, green hills, the air is pure, the village is charming, and the people are generally lovable. Yet, Father Tim, the bachelor rector, wants something more. Enter a dog the size of a sofa who moves in and won't go away. Add an attractive neighbor who begins wearing a path through the hedge. Now, stir in a lovable but unloved boy, a mystifying jewel theft, and a secret that's sixty years old. Suddenly, Father Tim gets more than he bargained for. And readers get a rich comedy about ordinary people and their ordinary lives.

This book came highly recommended. Although, the storyline is charming at times, I found the transitions rather choppy and lacking flow.
I was stunned to see the use of the "n-word" and would caution readers regarding this.

Because I read a variety of literature, most recent being THE DUTCH HOUSE, along with more typical mysteries with tense activity (Julia Fleming's are chaotic stress and an interesting love attraction, while the Jacqueline Winspear and Charles Finch mysteries are more reflelctive), I need a quiet read on the couch before going to bed at night. I am a recent widow and need a good night's sleep. I can count on Father Tim and Mitford. The tensions are there, but so is faith in God and human nature, and they don't alert the nervous system. I simply could not get into it as for me it lost its charm with the son grown up.

this is the FIRST book in the series of 14 titles total thru yr 2017

Reading the series in the order of publication date is a very important crescendo. Series is known as Mitford.
Each and all, very pleasant reading.
Karon's pages flow with an ease of dialogue and circumstance.

Loved it! Descriptive and imaginative. Small town, good people, some crime, but, I would like to be there and know all those people. A great read.

Mitford may not be perfect - but it would be a wonderful place to live in;-) The story is not only enjoyable but funny too. I've read Ms Karon's first book three times and enjoyed it each time. "Believe it or not" - I hope to read it again;-)

Love Jan Karon's Mitford Series. Reading them through for the second time now. Great writing, wonderful characters, very uplifting yet filled with trials and problems as well as joys and delights. Love the people, especially Father Tim. The dialogue is great, too.
