This book is a useful resource as a starting point. It does not follow a story or a narrator, but instead approaches death as a discussion. I felt like this book had three parts: the first, in explaining the idea of death. How death happens, what it looks like, how it's portrayed in media versus real life, etc. The second part dealt more with grief, what it looks like, how it can feel, and how it changes from person to person. The third part, the very back of the book, has a helpful guide for parents, caregivers, and family members as they try to teach young children about death. The author, Pat Thomas, has included several resources and tips for teaching children about death.

As the cover of this book looks a little childish, I was not prepared to like it. I do, though. I think it's one of my favorites. it uses pet fish to explain complex thoughts surrounding death and grief. The pet fish loses his friend and goes through complex emotions and depression. The book validates these feelings and give subtle advice. Definitely a great pick for children.

The goal of this book is to help children grasp the concept of alive and dead. Life is shown through animals living, breathing, and doing, while death is the opposite, when it disappears, so does the actions of life. This is portrayed through animals who are experiencing life. The second part of the book talks about life after death and what some believe and how some cope. It's a great introduction to life and death, while being a little abstract.

This book does not deal directly with death, but with sadness and tears. It reinforces that tears are normal, everyone cries, and not everyone's reaction with tears is the same. It talks about crying being refreshing, but also about how we feel sometimes like we are drowning in our tears and need to seek outside help and comfort. It also shows adults crying and having complex feelings.

The author intended this to be a letter from a parent to a child about love existing, always, whether the child ages or the distance increases. It does not have exact pronouns/titles for the child or parent, so it's versatile. The illustrations show a child going on adventures while the poetic prose is present on each page about love and following the child through their life. This could be a reminder book for children that even though someone is gone, they are always with us in love.
